Polymer cable trays have more advantages than metal cable trays in highly corrosive environments, which is closely related to their material properties, molecular structure and comprehensive performance. First of all, polymer cable trays are usually made of materials such as polyvinyl chloride, unsaturated polyester resin, and glass fiber reinforced plastic. The molecular chains are bonded by covalent bonds, and the chemical properties are stable. It is not easy to react with corrosive media such as acids, alkalis, and salts. For example, the resin matrix in the FRP cable tray can resist the corrosion of strong acids such as sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, and the PVC material can withstand most alkaline solutions, which fundamentally avoids the rust problem of metal cable trays caused by redox reactions.
Secondly, after high-temperature molding or pultrusion, the polymer material has a smooth and dense surface, no metal lattice gaps inside, and it is difficult for moisture and corrosive gases to penetrate. The glass fiber and resin composite structure of the FRP cable tray form a "physical barrier", which will not cause electrochemical corrosion or intergranular corrosion similar to metals even if it is in a humid environment or in contact with chemical liquids for a long time.
Furthermore, polymer materials themselves are not conductive, and will not form a galvanic effect due to potential difference in a humid or electrolyte environment, completely eliminating the risk of electrochemical corrosion. At the same time, by adding anti-ultraviolet additives, antioxidants, etc., polymer bridges can resist aging caused by ultraviolet rays, ozone, high and low temperatures and other factors. For example, after special treatment, the weather resistance life of outdoor FRP bridges can reach more than 20 years, while metal bridges are prone to structural embrittlement due to oxidation and rust in outdoor strong corrosion environments.
From the application scenario, in strong corrosion environments such as chemical parks, metallurgical workshops, and offshore platforms, metal bridges face problems such as acid mist corrosion, high temperature corrosion, and salt spray pitting, while polymer bridges have significant advantages. For example, PVC bridges are resistant to chemical media erosion, FRP bridges can resist strong acids and alkalis, and some models can withstand high temperatures above 120°C, and have strong resistance to chloride ion penetration.
In terms of comprehensive cost, the weight of polymer bridges is only 1/3 - 1/2 of that of metal bridges, with lower transportation and installation costs, and no welding or anti-corrosion coating is required. In a highly corrosive environment, metal cable trays require annual maintenance costs, while polymer cable trays require almost no maintenance, and their service life is 2-3 times that of ordinary metal cable trays, reducing the cost of the entire life cycle by more than 40%. Therefore, when choosing polymer cable trays, PVC or glass fiber reinforced PVC cable trays can be used in moderately corrosive environments; epoxy resin-based or vinyl ester resin FRP cable trays are preferred in highly corrosive environments; and FRP cable trays with added weathering additives and a glass fiber content of ≥60% are recommended for outdoor high salt spray environments to ensure corrosion resistance and structural strength. With the inherent corrosion resistance and comprehensive advantages of the material, polymer cable trays are gradually replacing traditional metal cable trays in the fields of chemical industry, metallurgy, marine engineering, etc., becoming the preferred solution for "corrosion resistance and durability" in highly corrosive environments.
